Boreal Forest Observatory

Canopy CO2 data are collected as part of a long-term monitoring effort to detect changes in the Anchorage airshed and boreal ecosystem function and in support of a study designed to monitor belowground respiration on a continuous basis throughout the winter.
Variation in CO2 concentrations within the forest canopy reflect the combined effects of diurnal variation in the depth of the planetary boundary layer, fossil fuel combustion within the Anchorage bowl, build-up of ecosystem-respired CO2 within the forest canopy and periodic atmospheric inversions.
